NUJ members at the Gazette Group Newspapers are in dispute with their employer and have decided to stage a lunchtime protest (1.00pm to 2.00pm) this Wednesday, 27 May outside the company’s premises. The address is Clarendon House, 39 Clarendon Street, Dublin 2.
The key issue is the decision of the company to unilaterally change the way our members are paid. Since late last year our members have been paid in two instalments (instead of their usual one monthly payment) and this is causing them significant difficulties.
In recent years our members have been flexible with the company during very difficult times but now they are at breaking point. They have been forced to accept pay cuts and have endured hardship. The company has also decided to relocate to Dundrum, which means extra travel expense for our hard-pressed members.
The NUJ Irish Office is asking all members of the IEC and NEC, Chairs of the Dublin branches and the RTÉ Sub Branch to email their members, asking them to attend the protest.
We have asked the company to respond to us by 10.00am on Wednesday morning. At this point we have to presume the protest will proceed as planned. Should the company respond in a positive manner to us, there is the possibility that the protest will be called off. If that happens we will inform you immediately and this information should be relayed to the members you represent. As it stands now the protest will proceed.
Thanks and I hope to see you at the protest this Wednesday
